Beverly Sills

I’m giving up this week that my iTunes library contains more than the latest alt and pop releases, but dang, there are some great people dying for some reason!

American opera legend Beverly Sills passed away tonight at 9 PM at the age of 78, due to inoperable lung cancer. She was one of the most popular opera stars ever here in the States, appearing on tons of different variety shows including appearances on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and The Muppet Show.

She is survived by her two children and two step-children.

R.I.P. Leo Burmester

Leo Burmester

Geez, I’m starting to feel like all I’m doing is writing about dead people!!!

Leo Burmester died on Thursday of leukemia, also at the age of 63. He played character parts in a slew of movies including Broadcast News, The Last Temptation of Christ, and Glengarry Glen Ross, as well as tons of TV guest appearances.

However, for those of us who spent our high school years as theater geeks, he will always be the original Thernadier in Les Miserables.

Joel Siegel

Movie critic and Good Morning America contributor Joel Siegel died today of colon cancer. He was 63 years old, and is survived by his wife and young son.

I gotta say.. it seems like there are a LOT of people dying this year in the industry and it’s getting damn depressing.

The Latest on Chris Benoit

by in Wednesday, June 27th, 2007.
Crazy, R.I.P.
Chris Benoit

I’m going to start of by admitting that I’m not a fan of “pro” wrestling, so if you are, just move right along past this.

I don’t get the idea of staged fights with muscle-bound folks as entertainment. I get that some people seem to enjoy it, but I don’t understand WHY. There seems to be a very Neanderthal-like mindset around it.

So I wasn’t particularly surprised when news broke about Chris Benoit killing his wife and son then offing himself, nor that he was using steroids. The whole thing is so fakey to begin with, why not have a psycho willing to abuse his body for the part?

But when I see the Daily News item that suggests that he was injecting his SEVEN-YEAR-OLD son with human growth hormone because he was small? That’s when I start hoping this industry gets an full anal probe from The Powers That Be.

R.I.P. Claudia Cohen

Claudia Cohen

Wow! I had no idea she was even sick!

There are certain names in the gossip biz who are revered, and Claudia Cohen was certainly one of them. A columnist with the NY Daily News and frequent contributor on Live with Regis and Kelly, the 57-year-old died yesterday afternoon at the age of 57.

NYDN said that she had apparently been battling stomach cancer for six years, while other reports say it was ovarian cancer. Friends interviewed by the NYDN said she didn’t let on much about her illness; just kept working.

Cohen was the former editor of Page Six, and was in the gossip columns herself during her courtship, marriage, and subsequent divorce from billionaire businessman Ron Perelman.

She is survived by her brother James and her daughter Samantha.

RIP Charles Nelson Reilly

by in Monday, May 28th, 2007.
R.I.P.

I may be betraying my age, but I can remember being a kid and watching Match Game and thinking Charles Nelson Reilly and thinking he was hilarious, and that was BEFORE I understood half of what he was saying. While he had a distinguished stage career, he taught a lot of us kids to think back before we had 24/7 children’s programming, and I think think that may have been more valuable than colors and numbers.

Reilly passed away due to complications from pneumonia on Friday. He is survived by his partner, Patrick Hughes.

They Lost Scotty!!!!

by in Thursday, May 10th, 2007.
R.I.P.

James Doohan: Scotty

Remember when I told you they were going to beam Scotty’s ashes up?
THEY LOST HIM!

The ashes don’t actually stay up in space (which was what I originally thought). They just go up, come down, and get retrieved. Only they can’t figure out where they landed, so they can’t pick them up!

The company that runs this whole operation claim that they know the “general area” but “haven’t been able to reach it” because of the weather. In New Mexico. It’s not like this is Mount Everest we are talking about here. Too bad for the company that probably THE most famous person to sign up for this is the one they lost.

R.I.P. Tom Poston

by in Tuesday, May 1st, 2007.
R.I.P.

Suzanne Pleshette and Tom Poston

Actor Tom Poston, best known for his role on the television show Newhart, died Tuesday after what his publicist refers to as a brief illness. Known for his laid-back style and deep voice, he was the perfect opposite to Bob Newhart’s more frenetic character. Keeping it all in the TV family, Poston married Suzanne Pleshette, Bob Newhart’s co-star in his previous sitcom, The Bob Newhart Show, in 2001. Poston was a recurring character on that show as well. More recently, he guest-starred on shows like That 70s Show and The Disney Channel’s The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, his last listed credit on IMDB.
